What is a points transfer bonus?
A transfer bonus is a limited-time multiplier applied to a program’s standard transfer ratio. Ratios vary by issuer, card, and partner: many are 1:1, while current examples include Amex to Hilton at 1:2, Citi to Accor at 2:1 for many cardholders, and Capital One to EVA at 4:3. Chase to Hyatt can also be 1:1 or 4:3 depending on card and account eligibility. The table above shows the effective partner points produced by each live bonus instead of assuming every transfer starts at 1:1.
Why they matter: a transfer bonus is one of the only ways to durably increase the redemption value of points you have already earned. Award space is priced in the partner’s currency, so a bonus directly lowers the cost of every award flight or hotel night you book at that partner during the campaign window. The catch is that once points leave your card portal, they are bound to the partner’s program rules, including its award chart, fees, and expiration. Bonuses reward people who already know what they want to book.
When should you transfer points?
Transfer to a partner only when you have a specific redemption in mind, the award space is showing live, and the partner’s price for that redemption, after the bonus, beats the next best alternative (your card’s travel portal, a different transfer partner, or paying cash and earning miles). Once you transfer, you cannot reverse the move, and the miles you receive sit under that partner’s rules: they may expire, the partner may devalue its award chart, or the route you were targeting may disappear.
In practice, the strongest plays are time-sensitive: a transfer bonus to a partner whose award space you have already confirmed, for a trip you would book this week or next. Speculative transfers, moving points to “stock up,” are a common and expensive mistake, because the partner miles you collect are no longer flexible across other programs.
How to use a transfer bonus, step by step
- Find a live bonus in the table above whose source program you have points in.
- Search the partner award you want to book on Roame SkyView. Confirm the seat or room is bookable at a reasonable mileage price.
- Transfer just enough points to cover the booking. Never transfer for “later.”
- Book within minutes, before the seat is gone or the partner re-prices the award.
Historical example (promotion expired June 30, 2026): an Air France business-class JFK–CDG award priced at 50,000 Flying Blue miles required 40,000 Membership Rewards points during the former 25% Amex-to-Flying-Blue bonus. The screenshots and calculation below illustrate how bonus math works; use the current table above for offers available today.
Historical Redemption Example
Using Roame's SkyView Explore Tool, you can quickly and easily search for lie-flat business class options from North America to Europe.
In doing so, we see a multitude of fantastic lie-flat business class options flying on Air France and KLM, costing only 50,000 points in each direction.

For direct comparison purposes, let's look at the Air France route going from JFK to CDG. If you were to pay this out of pocket, it would cost you $4,103 at minimum, ouch.
If you didn't transfer your points and chose to book in a travel portal like Capital One's instead, this would cost you ~410,300 points. If you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve and booked this flight via their portal, it could cost you ~273,533 points. That's a lot of points!

Transfer Bonus History By Issuer
Amex Membership Rewards
American Express runs transfer bonuses frequently, but the percentage and duration vary widely by partner and campaign. Recent offers in this page’s history range from 10% to 40%, and Membership Rewards transfer ratios are not universally 1:1. For the current partner list, standard ratios, and a deeper play-by-play, see our Amex transfer partners guide. The most reliable way to use an Amex transfer bonus is to wait for one to your highest-value airline partner, then book a redemption you have already verified on Roame.
