Roame points education
Transfer points vs. cash back: the same points can take you further
Transferring eligible credit card points to an airline can unlock much higher cents per point (CPP) than cashing them out. The opportunity comes from the difference between a flight’s cash price and its award price. Find a bookable award, subtract the fees, and compare the value before you transfer.
Why transfers can unlock more value
Cash back gives your points a dollar value set by your issuer. For example, Chase describes a one-cent cash-back value for Ultimate Rewards. Other programs and redemption methods can differ; use your own account’s rate.
Airline awards are priced in miles, and that price does not always move in step with the cash fare. A high cash fare with a relatively low mileage cost can therefore create an outsized redemption. You are exchanging points for a seat, not converting them into cash at a fixed rate.

Explore this routeWhat would the same points buy as cash?
At a one-to-one transfer ratio, you would need 60,000 bank points. At a one-cent cash-back rate, those points would give you $600.00.
For this award, a comparable paid ticket above $657.00 would beat that cash-back value before other costs. The higher the comparable cash fare, the more value each transferred point delivers.
Use your card’s actual cash-back value and transfer ratio. A matching cash ticket price is not included in this award observation, so the thresholds below are calculations, not cash fare quotes.
| Value per bank point | Comparable cash ticket |
|---|---|
| 1¢ per point | $657.00 |
| 2¢ per point | $1,257.00 |
| 5¢ per point | $3,057.00 |
CPP = (comparable cash fare − award cash costs) ÷ bank points transferred × 100. Include any extra transfer or booking fees. Use the same itinerary and cabin; a high sticker-price CPP is not necessarily cash you would have spent.
How to book this example
- Search NRT to SAN on 2026-10-09 in business. Check every segment and the seats needed for your party.
- Open American Airlines and confirm the award at 60,000 points plus its current fees. The operating airline shown by the flight number can differ from the program you book through.
- Check your bank’s transfer partners for American Airlines. Roame’s chart lists Citi ThankYou (1:1), Marriott Bonvoy (3:1), IHG Rewards (5:1). Verify eligibility, transfer ratio, increments, bonuses, and timing in your issuer account. Do not assume every bank supports this program.
- Once you have confirmed availability and the full price, transfer only the points required and finish ticketing with American Airlines. Transfers can be final, and a cached example does not reserve inventory.
High CPP is useful. An honest comparison is better.
Use a price you would actually pay
An expensive business-class sticker price can produce impressive CPP, but it is not money saved if you would otherwise buy economy. Compare the same itinerary and cabin for redemption value, then separately ask what the trip is worth to you.
Count the full cash cost
Include award taxes, carrier surcharges, booking and transfer fees, and any extra positioning flights needed. Compare baggage, flexibility, refunds, and rewards earned on a paid ticket. Points cover only part of some awards.
Keep cash back in the running
If cash fares are low or an award requires too many miles, taking cash back can win. Bank travel portals can also offer competitive redemption options. A high CPP is a decision aid, not a reason to take a trip you do not want.
Find the flight first. Transfer second.
- Search for a trip you want. Use Roame flight search or SkyView to explore award availability. Confirm the travel dates, cabin on every leg, and seats for your whole party.
- Identify the program you will book through. The airline operating the flight can differ from the loyalty program selling the award. Partner programs may show different prices or availability. Use the transfer partners chart to find a supported path from your bank.
- Verify the award with that program. Check the exact itinerary, mileage price, taxes, surcharges, and cancellation policy on its own booking site. A result in Roame is not a seat hold. Compare its total value with your cash and portal options.
- Check the transfer terms before sending points. Confirm card eligibility, account-name requirements, ratios, bonuses, minimums, increments, and estimated timing. Transfer only what you need, allowing for required increments. American Express explicitly advises checking availability first because its transfers are final.
- Finish the booking with the airline program. Wait until the miles arrive, recheck the quote, and complete ticketing. Inventory can change while you wait. Keep the booking confirmation and verify that your ticket was issued.
Common questions about points transfers
Why can transferring points be worth more than cash back?
Cash back converts your bank points at your issuer’s redemption rate. An airline award uses the loyalty program’s mileage price instead. When that mileage price is low relative to the cash fare, transferring eligible bank points can buy substantially more travel value. Availability and fees determine whether that opportunity actually exists.
What does cents per point mean?
Cents per point, or CPP, measures the dollar value you receive for each point you spend. For an award flight, subtract the cash costs of the award from the comparable cash fare, divide by the bank points you would transfer, and convert dollars to cents. Compare that result with the cash-back or other redemption value available to you.
Does a transfer always beat cash back?
No. A cheap cash fare, expensive award, high surcharge, or strong cash-redemption option can make cash back the better choice. Cash also gives you flexibility. The right redemption fits your trip and budget, not just a high CPP figure.
Is transferring points the same as booking through my bank’s travel portal?
No. A portal lets you book through your bank’s travel service using its payment and redemption options. A transfer moves eligible bank points into a partner loyalty account, where you redeem under that program’s rules. Compare both options: portal pricing and benefits can also be competitive.
Which points can I transfer?
Only eligible rewards with a supported transfer option. Card eligibility, country, destination program, transfer ratio, minimums, and increments vary. Airline miles already in a loyalty account are different from flexible bank points. Check your issuer’s current terms and Roame’s transfer partners chart before deciding.
Should I transfer before finding an award seat?
Find the seat first, then verify the itinerary, cabin, passenger count, miles, and cash costs directly with the booking program. Transfers may take time and are often final, so inventory can disappear before the miles arrive. Do not transfer just because a search result or transfer promotion looks attractive.
How do transfer bonuses affect CPP?
An eligible bonus may reduce how many bank points you need for the same airline award. Calculate value using the bank points you actually transfer after the ratio, bonus, and transfer increments—not just the airline miles required. Check promotion eligibility and expiry, and count any points left over conservatively.
Does Roame transfer my points or issue the airline ticket?
Roame helps you find and compare award availability. You transfer eligible points through your issuer and complete the award booking with the airline loyalty program. A Roame result is not a seat hold or ticket confirmation; confirm the final details with the booking program.
Put your points to work on a real trip
Start with availability, then check the numbers. Roame helps you discover award options; your issuer handles the transfer and the airline program handles the booking.
