Top ways to redeem Lifemiles

Business class to Europe

Business class to Europe costs a flat 63,000 miles one-way whether you're flying nonstop from the East Coast or connecting from the West Coast. With the 15% bonus, you only need to transfer 55,000 Amex points.

You can fly SWISS between New York and Zurich for 55,000 Lifemiles in business class. With the bonus, that's just 48,000 Amex points–thousands less than what Aeroplan charges.

Brussels Airlines business class from Washington Dulles or JFK to Brussels costs 63,000 miles each way plus about $61 in taxes. That's 55,000 Amex points with this bonus.

ANA first class to Japan

ANA first class from the US to Japan runs 120,000 LifeMiles. With the bonus, you'll need 104,348 Membership Rewards. Not a small amount, but ANA's first class is one of the best products flying.

Domestic United flights

Many short domestic United flights price at just 10,000 miles plus $5.60 in taxes. With the bonus, that's only 8,700 Amex points. Perfect for positioning flights or short hops.

You can book domestic United awards starting at 7,000 Amex points after the transfer bonus.

Lufthansa first class

LifeMiles restored Lufthansa award availability, so you can book Lufthansa first class between North America and Europe for 112,000 Amex points each way. That's less than 100,000 Amex points with the bonus.

Important things to know

  • Miles expire after just 12 months of inactivity. You can keep them alive by transferring more points or booking an award.
  • Change and cancellation fees are expensive, though you can avoid them by signing up for a Lifemiles+ subscription at the Basic level or higher. The Basic plan costs $50 monthly but includes free cancellations up to 72 hours before departure.
  • The booking website can be clunky. Sometimes you need to search multiple times or try different airports to find availability. Also make sure to search using Star Alliance search.
  • Transfers are permanent. You can't move points back to Amex once you transfer them to LifeMiles.

Final thoughts

A 15% transfer bonus to LifeMiles creates some solid opportunities for Star Alliance redemptions. Business class to Europe for 55,000 Amex points (after the transfer bonus) is the best value.

Finding availability on Star Alliance partners can be challenging. That's where Roame's SkyView comes in handy. You can track award space across multiple airlines and get alerts when seats open up. Head to Roame's SkyView to start tracking availability today.
