Hotel credit cards are oftentimes not looked at seriously, but it's incredibly important to take a second look at them considering the wealth of benefits they provide.

The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card is no exception to this stereotype. From a first glance, it might not seem like the well known Chase Sapphire Reserve® or the The Platinum Card® from American Express, but this Marriott card packs a serious punch.

Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Earn Structure

This card has decent earn rates when spending on Marriott hotels, but poor rates elsewhere.

  • 6x points for every $1 spent at over 7,000 hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy®
  • 3X points for every $1 on the first $6,000 spent in combined purchases each year on grocery stores, gas stations, and dining
  • 2X points for every $1 you spend on all other purchases

Marriott points do not have the same value as Chase, AMEX, or Capital One points/miles. Consequently, I would never put any non-Marriott spend on this card since I earn so much better for my travel expenses elsewhere.

Free Night Award Every Anniversary

The absolute best feature of this card is the ability to receive a Free Night Award every year after your account anniversary (up to 35,000 points).

Marriotts around the world rarely run less than $95 per night (the annual fee of this card). Effectively, this card can get you outsized value on your hotel nights with just this singular annual investment. Consequently, for some, this benefit alone may be enough to justify pursuing this card.

Earn 1 Elite Night Credit For Every $5,000 Spent

For those pursuing Marriott Elite Status, this card can help push you one step closer. Cardholders get 1 Elite Night Credit for every $5,000 they spend on this card, with no limit to the number of Elite Nights accrued.

Receive 15 Elite Night Credits Each Calendar Year

Just by having this card, cardholders also receive 15 elite night credits each calendar year. This can be an incredibly useful way to kickstart your Marriott points journey and combos incredibly well with the Marriott business card, which also gives you an additional 15 elite nights per year (meaning with this card and Marriott Business card, you could start each year with 30 Elite Nights!).

With both a qualifying Marriott personal and business card, you can start with 30 nights—60% of the way there to Platinum status with Marriott!

Automatic Silver Elite Benefits

Cardholders automatically receive Marriott Silver Elite status each year they are an active cardholder. While this does not offer much, it is still better than nothing and can give you a taste of what Marriott status has to offer down the road.

Not A Well Known Benefit: Upgrade To The Ritz-Carlton Card After 12 Months

One of the more hidden benefits of this card is the ability to upgrade it to the coveted Ritz-Carlton card after owning the Marriott Boundless for 12 months or more. The Ritz-Carlton card is an extremely powerful card with the following benefits:

  • Annual free night award for up to 85,000 points
  • Annual $300 airline incidental credit
  • Priority pass membership with restaurant access & unlimited guests
  • Up to $100 statement credit for Global Entry, TSA Precheck, or NEXUS every four years
  • Annual fee of $450

To be eligible to get this card, make sure you follow the steps:

  1. Apply for and hold the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless card for at least 1 year
  2. Ensure you have an available credit limit of at least $10,000
  3. Call the Chase number on the back of your card and request an upgrade to the Ritz-Carlton card

Is The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Card Worth It?

For anyone who stays in hotels more than once per year, the Boundless may be worth considering in great detail. With its fantastic sign-up bonus and annual free night award (for up to 35,000 points), it can provide significant value for those looking to save money on their hotel stays.

Likewise, there is a lot of value to be garnered when holding the card for at least 12 months and then upgrading to the coveted Ritz-Carlton card, which provides significant value for its users across the board. For Marriott-loyalists and cost-conscious travelers alike, this card is most certainly worth considering.
